Today, Cassie speaks to us about Christian travel, and how the book of Genesis has impacted her.

Tell us a bit about how you grew up and your childhood: My dad flew helicopters and my mom jumped out of them. Growing up with Army parents, I moved all over the place, from Germany to the US, which really inspired my sense of adventure and love for travel. What I didn’t have was faith in the home. When I got to college, my roommate dragged me to church for the first time and that’s where my faith walk began.

Inspiring biblical passage of the moment: Genesis 1. I am still awestruck by God’s creativity. The more of this world that I see, the more I think back to creation, and the more I am stunned by God.

Profession: Travel blogger!

If you wrote a memoir, what would the title be? Getting to know God through His Creation.

What has helped you grow spiritually in this season? I’m doing a “residency” class at my church. We meet for two hours in the very early morning to walk, line by line, through the Bible. It has been helpful to keep me accountable and get me through passages I have a hard time paying attention to on my own.

Just read/currently reading (and what has it taught you?): Genesis. I never realized how clearly the Old Testament points to Jesus, even from the very first book of the Bible.

How did God speak to you recently? I drove up to the summit of Mt Haleakalā in Maui to watch the sunrise. I was yet again reminded of Genesis 1, as I waited for the sun to peek above the clouds. In the beginnning, God said let there be light and there was light. And yet, He didn’t create the sun or the moon until the 4th day. Haleakalā at sunrise is just how I imagine those first 3 days to have been: as I waited for the sun to make its grand entrance the world was bathed in a warm glow, beautiful enough to be the remnants of that divine light.

Hobby: Traveling and blogging. When I’m not doing that I also love just hanging out at home with my husband, dogs, and cat.

Favorite person in scripture? Lately, I’ve been liking Abraham. He messes up a lot, but he also has moments of incredible faith. It’s also so encouraging that even though he messed up so much, God has still been so faithful to him.

Favorite holiday? Independence Day. I have a lot of great memories celebrating July 4th with Army parents.

A goal you have? I would love to visit all of the continents one day. I’m only at two, right now.

A special tradition you and your family engage in or keep: My husband and I try and pray before every trip. We’ve found that it keeps our focus on God and helps whenever travel gets stressful. These are our 4 favorite prayers.

Thing you want to raise awareness about: Christian Travel. I think there is so much more to it than mission trips and church tours. Every destination helps me get to know God better, and I hope to share that same inspiration with others.
