Today, Taylor speaks to us about not fitting in, her dream to become a nurse (she is currently studying!), how joy is contagious, and her desire for childlike faith.
Tell us a bit about how you grew up and your childhood: I grew up adventurous. I was always outside playing with a friend, dirt, or sports equipment my dad set out for us. My mom has mental health problems so we were lucky to have her home a lot. You could say it was a blessing in disguise. My dad is a teacher and coaches sports. He also refs. I grew up in sports. It wasn’t always an easy childhood. I had autoimmune disorders start for me at the age of four. I started out having alopecia, then JRA or arthritis as many knows, and now I have multiple sclerosis. It was hard growing up and trying to figure out why I was good at sports but still couldn’t fit in with the rest of my classmates.
Inspiring biblical passage of the moment: My inspiring biblical passage of the literal moment, because I have so many would be, John 13 NIV – “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.”
Spiritual growth focus at the moment: My spiritual growth focus at the moment is reading the Bible. I’m getting my faith reaffirmed on Easter. I want it to be a recognition of my baptism I had as a baby. I want it to mean that I really understand now what it means. I am discovering my gifts from the Holy Spirit, and it has called me to do this. I am so excited to share that day and also baptize my twin boys.
Profession: I am a CNA and going to nursing school. I have been a stay-at-home mom with my premature twins, since they have been born. I haven’t worked in over a year. I have been taking care of them and working on school.
How do you incorporate your connection with God into your daily, secular work? I incorporate my connection with God daily through an open prayer I like to keep. I talk to God so much throughout the day whether other people know it or not. I spend the majority of my thoughts on prayer. I always pray for the best outcomes, and I pray for people that I don’t even know. I love to do that when I am working also or have a doctor’s appointment. I pray for people in the waiting room with me. Any chance I get to pray for someone else I will. If an “enemies” name comes into my head, I pray for them and me.
If you wrote a memoir, what would the title be? If I wrote a memoir, it would be titled “Turtle Moments.” I love how in every situation I can think of a turtle and it reminds me to slow down. I know people all over the world struggle with the anxieties of everyday life.
When did you first encounter God and how did you encounter Him? I first encountered God one day after Sunday School at my church. I was preschool age. I looked up into the clouds and saw a family eating supper. I drew a picture of what I saw and brought it to my mom. The pastor of the church looked at it also. They thought it was cool and from then on I always look at that my first God sighting.
What has helped you grow spiritually in this season? My aunt has helped me grow spiritually in this season. I went to her after I broke down and cried out in that I needed help from God to feel better because I also struggle with mental health, and I have a lot of everyday stressors on top of it. My aunt has sent me many scriptures and sermons to listen to. I believe this has really helped me grow in this season.
Just read/currently reading (and what has it taught you?): I am currently reading the book Heaven is for Real. I have been trying to finish this book, for some time. It’s teaching me that childlike faith is what you need to enter the kingdom of heaven. Did I say that right? I always look at life like it’s through the eyes of my younger self. There was so much to be happy about and carefree about judgment and things that didn’t matter.
Top three essentials: My top three essentials are family, Bible, and food.
How did God speak to you recently? God speaks to me every night, in dreams. I have always woke up with amazing things to share… if I can remember them. I try to write my dreams down when I have time.
Hobby: My hobby is writing rap songs about my feelings. It’s another way of journaling and expressing myself.
Top three practical tips for staying spiritually strong: My top three practical tips for staying spiritually strong is keeping an open prayer, reading the Bible in free time and listening to other people’s testimonies.
Favorite person in scripture? My favorite person in scripture is Jesus. The verse John 3:16 comes to mind.
What do you want people to learn about God when they look at you? I want people to look at me and somehow see God in me or through me. I’m not exactly sure how to word that. I want people to be able to look at me and have a strong urge to pray. Not in a way that there’s something wrong with me so they need to pray, but in a way that they see a smile on my and notice that they could be thanking God for their blessings and can go to him when they need help. I want people to see that I have done this and received glory.
How do you leave your mark on your community? I leave my mark on my community by sharing the Scripture of the Lord. I try to smile in every situation. A smile is contagious, I believe. I try to spread happiness around my community.
“A smile is contagious, I believe.”
Favorite holiday? My favorite holiday is Thanksgiving. I like to think of every day as Thanksgiving in the sense of being thankful. I like to pray and not always ask for something but to thank God for what he has already placed in my life.
A goal you have? A goal I have is to become a nurse. I love helping people. Every person at some point in life will need to go to a doctor. I want to be the helping nurse that can pray with patients when appropriate, listen to them, give advice, and be there for them.
A special tradition you and your family engage in or keep: A special tradition my family engages in is getting together in the summer and taking a trip to visit the rest of our family that lives far away. This has always been special because family has always been the most important thing to me.
Question you will ask when you get to heaven? The question I will ask when I get to heaven will be, “Did I live the way you always intended me to?”
Thing you want to raise awareness about: A thing I want to raise awareness about is that Jesus died for our sins. I feel like people are so caught up on what happened yesterday, that they forget that Jesus already forgave us so we can live for today and hope for tomorrow.
“I feel like people are so caught up on what happened yesterday, that they forget that Jesus already forgave us so we can live for today and hope for tomorrow.”
