Mirror Check: Are We Exclusive?

By: Gabriela Yareliz

If you aren’t exclusive in a relationship– do you have a relationship at all? Exclusivity is everything. It acts as a boundary that protects a relationship and intimacy. Exclusivity shows priority. Exclusivity is allegiance. Exclusivity offers safety. Exclusivity means you are committed and serious. If a brand has exclusivity in a collaboration– it’s limited edition/access. There is only one place you can typically find it. It’s typically more expensive and special.

God wants us to be exclusive.

Exodus 20:3 (looking into the mirror) says, “You shall have no other gods before me.” (ESV)

The first commandment is one that focuses on object of worship. Who has our attention and affection? (That is the main question here).

Our hearts are wired to worship. Anthropologist have gone into the depths of uncharted terrorities and found that humans, no matter where they are, worship. I have often heard the saying, there are no atheists. I believe this to be true. We all worship something. The question is what.

A part of this command, when we read into it and stack it against the rest of Scripture, is that God has declared Himself the One True God. Creator of the universe and all that is in it. In some ways, I see this commandment as God spelling it out for us to save us from hardship. He is like, Love, don’t waste your time. You will seek something out. Search for me. I am the only one who will satisfy you. I am the only one who knows your heart and can fulfill your desires.

God is like:

God is like go big or go home. He doesn’t want crumbs. He demands something pretty grand of us. He gives us everything and asks for everything in return. He wants to be exclusive.

Mirror Check Questions: Am I exclusive with God yet? Have I really given Him my whole heart and trust? In my choices, have I reflected a type of love that thrives in exclusivity? Do my choices reflect that I believe He is the only one who should have my heart?
