Mirror Check

By: Gabriela Yareliz

We all do mirror checks. You know, where we look at our outfit or our makeup in the mirror to make sure things look right and all is in place. In a time when we are photographed often and judged a lot for our appearance, this is a normal thing we do multiple times a day.

Aside from our societal vanity, mirrors are important. Looking into one can be very revealing.

Scholars have often equated God’s law to a mirror. The Ten Commandments are what are called the bare minimum we can do as humans. God knew how astray we could go, and so He provided us with a map to His character. A map that would allow us to explore His image in us and all we were created to be. The Ten Commandments serve as a mirror check to all of us, in the bare minimum standard, and they also serve as a reminder of the attributes of God. We are called to mirror Him.

Over the next few days, we are offering short reflections that serve as mirror checks (mirror checks are often quick glances). The hope is that we can routinely (if we aren’t already) do the mirror check. Are we accurately reflecting God’s character? Where are certain things creeping in and derailing us? How can we use this to guide our prayers as we ask God to transform our hearts?

Join us as we go through the looking glass.
